Thermodynamique des Equilibres
S6 G.P

Surface Phenomena and Heterogeneous Catalysis
S6 G.P

FOREWORD

This handout is the result of two years of teaching the course " Surface Phenomena and Heterogeneous Catalysis " in accordance with the curriculum for students preparing for a bachelor's degree and engineering degree in Process Engineering in the Process Engineering Department of the Faculty of Technology at the University of Setif1 Ferhat Abbas.

The work carried out is presented in the form of a handout consisting of two parts:

The first part is devoted to the study of surface phenomena. It is divided into two chapters:

1.     Surface activity: This chapter covers the basic concepts of surface phenomena, focusing on the physical and energetic aspects of the surface tension of liquids and aqueous solutions. Surface activity phenomena, which are of great importance in the detergent industry, are also presented.

2.     Adsorption: Solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces will be discussed in this chapter, and the models corresponding to the different isotherms will be examined.

The second part will focus on catalysis. The four main sections of this part are:

1.     Heterogeneous catalysis: this chapter covers the basic principles of heterogeneous catalysis and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal kinetic models.

2.     Practical aspects of catalysis: In this section, we will discuss the different methods of catalyst preparation, in particular the competitive impregnation method in the case of monometallic and bimetallic catalysts.
